The Story
The Mahamevnawa (pronounced maha-MAY-oo-NA-wa) Winnipeg branch is located at 2610 St. Mary’s Road which is a very calm and peaceful rural setting ideal for the purpose of a monastery. This provides a peaceful atmosphere that we require while still being conveniently close to the city. This is a non-residential meditation center. There will not be overnight accommodations for the public. The only residents are the monks, now numbering two to three.
The life of a monastery revolves around following the instructions of the Buddha: practicing generosity, practicing virtue, and developing the mind.
Every morning, one or two people come to the monastery and offer food to the monks. While they are here they have the opportunity to learn how to practice the Buddha’s teaching in their daily lives. If they have questions or need advice, the monks are available to talk with them. The monks encourage them to follow the moral guidelines the Buddha gave to lay people.
Using the material support offered by the lay people, the monks can then spend their time devoted to meditation, study, and Dhamma discussions.
In the evenings and on the weekends there are activities organized for the public to come and practice the Buddha’s teachings.. From time to time lay people will gather at the monastery to organize social service activities such as serving food to the homeless.
Development Project - A Place of Worship
We are in the process of converting the current property (house) into a place of worship which includes an assembly area and a residential facility for monks. We as per the building codes and by-laws (City of Winnipeg), this development require a complex approval /development process (Zoning, planning approval, etc.). We are happy to announce that zoning approval has been granted subjected to the completion of the development by Oct 2019.
Estimated Costs
Please note that this budget is subjected to revisions based on the inputs from the Architect, Engineers and City Planners and we will keep updating the progress (including the budget).
We are Accepting Donations
We happily accept donations of any amount for the benefit of the development of the property. Donations are used towards the building developments ONLY.
We have already spent around $3,500 towards the initial zoning applications and related expenses. So far we have collected around $42,500 (including above expenses) from local donations, specifically for this project. The Centre is operated mainly from the donations received from local members. However, we are expecting more donations from local resources. Depending on the funds collected locally and other sources, our target will be reduced.
Alternate to this website, you can also send your donations directly to the Monastery. The cheque payments can be made to “Mahamevnawa Buddhist Monastery in Winnipeg” and posted to the below address.
Tax Receipts
We are a registered Charity in Canada since 2016. If you are a Canadian resident who would like a receipt of your donation for tax purposes, please let us know via email to email is treasurer@mahamevnawawinnipeg.org.
May triple gems bless you all!
